School Library

DGS Library is a vibrant welcoming space located at the heart of our school campus and is open throughout the school day.

The focus of the library is to create a space where students can read and study comfortably with access to a range of books to support the curriculum as well as leisure reading. The collection is continually being developed to ensure it remains fresh, relevant and caters to all reading interests and levels. Students are supported in their research and leisure reading by the School Librarian and the Performing Arts Teacher.

Reading is an ageless pleasure and we hope to help students foster a lifelong habit of reading, and that they will benefit from the enjoyment and overall well-being it brings.

Annual Book Week

DGS Book Week is an annual school-wide celebration of books and reading, organised by the Library and the English Department. Students enjoy visits from guest speakers from across the literary world that have included authors, illustrators, editors, journalists, storytellers and spoken-word poets. The week is packed with book-themed competitions and activities, with favourite characters walking the school halls for dress-up on World Book Day!

The 2025 Book Week was themed In Between Worlds, inspired by the title of local author Nicola Pierce's historical novel about the famine girls' journey to Australia. Students embraced the theme in the library window painting competition and decoration.

In 2025 Drogheda Grammar School began the journey to achieving the National Wellread Award, which aims to develop a lifelong love of reading for enjoyment throughout the whole school community.

A Wellread Committee of students, staff and parents work together to develop the Wellread Programme and make reading a natural part of the school environment. Some initiatives from 2025-2026 include:

  • Annual Book Week expanded into 'Book Season' with events from January to April
  • Creative Writing workshops by author Dave Rudden
  • Lunchtime Book Club
  • 1st Year visits to local public library
  • TY Wellread Reading Module
  • Library scavenger hunts and competitions
  • DGS Library visits from local primary school students

We look forward to developing the programme further and sharing progress here. More information on the National Wellread Award can be found on the PDST website https://pdst.ie
